Googling without Google : The Alternative Tools

by Amit Verma on August 28, 2008

I have listed a few search engines which can be uses as a alternate of Google.

ranking.thumbshots.com

It is a fun way but yet helping tool to search the web. It shows the overlap of the search results on the different search engines including “alltheweb“, “altavita“, “google“, “msn” and “yahoo“. This tool helps in comparing the ranking of the website on different search engine. You can do the search in the two search engine with the same search query or different. Ranking tool fetches 100 results from both the search engines. A website can also be given optionally to highlight its ranking.

It shows overlapped results as blue dot with the link between them. Roll mouse over the dots to see the thubshot.

exalead.com

It provides quite a good features which can really help you to find your search. It gives you the following features:

  • Phonetic Search - you can use this search if you don’t know the spelling of the word. e.g. soundslike:shakespear
  • Proximity Search - The NEAR operator display the search results where the query terms are within 16 words of each other. e.g movie star NEAR hollywood. Another operator NEXT finds documents where the query terms are next to each other. e.g. movie NEXT star.
  • Title search - Using intitle: operator you can search only in the title of documents.
  • Search by Date - Using the before: and after: operators you can search the documents which are created or modified before or after the given date. Date should be in YYYY/MM/DD. e.g. movie star before:2004/05/21 or movie star after:2004/05/21
  • Boolean Logic - It gives you the power to search with Boolean operators. The AND and OR operators can be combined to match documents against advanced Boolean logic. e.g. (movie AND star) OR (famous AND people)
  • Regular Expressions - It is the feature which I like the most. You can search using the Regular Expressions patterns. The Regular Expression pattern must be bound between the slash “/” character. e.g. /mpg(1|2|3)?/

Tafiti.com

I like it’s new interface which is made in Silverlight.

  • This search engine gives the functionality to search the search results. Means you can refine the search results by searching within the search results. Isn’t it cool?
  • You can also save the search results just by dragging them to the shelf.
  • It also shows the search results in the tree-based visualization. This tree visualization slowly cycles through and displays all the results for your query.

kartoo.com

Kartoo is a meta search engine which displays results on a map. In the result map, results are displayed by more or less important size pages, depending on their relevance. When you take the mouse pointer over these pages, the concerned keywords are illuminated and a brief description of the site appears on the left side of the screen. It also display subject on the left side and the map.
